Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

Frequently Asked Questions about the Electronic Travel Authorisation for entry to the UK (ETA)

What is the UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)?

The ETA is a digital authorisation that certain visa-exempt domestic travellers must obtain before travelling to the UK. It is a new requirement designed to improve border security.

From what date is the ETA required?

The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), will come into force from 8 January for certain nationalities outside the European Union.
European citizens will need the ETA from 2 April 2025. They will be able to apply from 5 March 2025 for travel from 2 April 2025.

When do I need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to travel to the UK?

You need to apply for an ETA to travel to the UK if you are:

  • Nationals of one of these countries.
  • Staying in the UK for 6 months or less.
  • The reason for travel is tourism, pleasure, business or a stopover in the UK (even if it is to fly to another country).
  • All travellers, including children and babies, need an ETA.

Remember that the UK consists of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, so an ETA is required for any of these destinations.

How long is the ETA valid?

The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is valid for two years from the date of issue (or until the expiry date of your passport if this is earlier than two years) and allows you to travel to the UK for that period of time.

How to apply for an ETA?

Applications can be submitted online or via the UK ETA mobile app.

You will need to provide:

  • Personal details (e.g. name, passport number, date of birth).
  • Travel information
  • Payment of the fee

Remember that a valid passport will be required for your application.

How long does it take to obtain an ETA?

Most applicants will receive a decision immediately, although some applications may take up to 72 hours to be approved. However, it is recommended to apply well in advance of your planned travel dates.
